Josh Grimmer: State of the Union for September 11, 2010

Weekly State of the Union – September 11, 2010

A banner week for Writing, Writer, Writest! I guess there have only been two weeks of this stuff, but this one was easily the best of the two. I really want to thank everyone who has been submitting and participating and commenting and sharing. The sharing is what I like best. Yes. Sharing. Sharing with friends. (You'll find much of Earth sharing works this way. It's really more like I'm sharing with myself.)

An important note – Tina Rowley's piece, “Nothing,” was featured on Schmutzie's Five Star Friday thing. Hats off to you, Tina, for being the blinding, brilliant light that you are.

Now that families week is over, we shift our focus to the nearly perfect. There are so few things in the world that are perfect. I can think of maybe a dozen. This Is Spinal Tap, cribbage, chocolate soy milk, white-with-navy-stripes adidas Superstars, Karen Carpenter's voice, the second season of Arrested Development. Maybe a few others. That being said, there are millions of things that are nearly perfect. Almost. So close. Not quite. Maybe it's the aftertaste that ruins your favorite gin. Maybe it's the small crack in the face of your wristwatch. Maybe it's goddamned fucking Sally Draper's stupid irritating fucking lisp ruining season three of Mad Men. Whatever it is, it's not perfect, and it bothers you. Or maybe it doesn't. Maybe imperfection is what makes life worth living.

Or maybe it makes life infuriating. That's more likely the case.

Anyhow, this week we've got essays coming from some of your favorites – as well as a couple of new, fresh writers! Tomorrow I'll be posting my essay, “Wouldn't it be Nicer?” I'm sure you're all counting down the seconds!

Love always,

Josh Grimmer, Editor in Chief.

  3. Katie, I hope you love Sally Draper enough to protect her from me, because seriously, I want to grab that kid by the neck and snap it like I was going to make her into a chicken dinner.

    She's the MOST ANNOYING CHILD.

  4. The Most Annoying Child - new FOX reality series. I'm not even kidding. Do you realize what a hit that would be? People love nothing more than to see kids who are worse than their own.

Thanks for letting me tag along here.
